18 February 2010

Friday, February 19, at the 29th edition of the International Exhibition of Contemporary Art ARCOmadrid (Madrid, February 17-21) the illy Prize has been awarded to Camilo Ontiveros, whose work was on display in the special section “Panorama: Los Angeles.”

The winner, selected by an international panel of judges led by two independent curators, Kris Kuramitsu and Christopher Miles, and illycaffè’s Art Director Carlo Bach, has received 15,000 Euros.  Additionally, he has the opportunity to present a proposal to create a new set of limited-edition illy Art Collection coffee cups.  Dating to 1992, the leading Italian coffee company’s collaborations with some of the world’s leading international contemporary artists and emerging talent, have produced striking, much-sought-after cups, designed to enhance the enjoyment of coffee in pairing it with beautiful objects.

illycaffè renews its involvement with ARCOmadrid, one of the foremost international events for contemporary art. In the two prior fairs, the Premio illy sustainArt prize was awarded to artists from coffee-growing countries, respectively Brazil and India: in 2008 the winner was the Brazilian Matheus Rocha Pitta. In 2009, the prize went to the Indian artist Avinash Veeraraghavan.

At ARCOmadrid, the Premio illy prize continues its broad support of emerging talents in contemporary art and design that the firm began more than 15 years ago in partnership with the  most important international art fairs and exhibitions, such as Artissima (Turin, Italia), Art Brussels (Brussels) and Art Rotterdam (Rotterdam).

The decision to host an urban center as part of this fair represents one of the major novelties of the 2010 edition of ARCOmadrid. Los Angeles, one of the world’s liveliest cities from an artistic point of view, is the first city to be featured.

There were 17 Los Angeles galleries taking part and will have their artists eligible for the Premio Illy prize:

1301PE; ACME; CHERRY AND MARTIN; CHINA ART OBJECTS GALLERIES; CHRISTOPHER GRIMES GALLERY; KATHRYN BRENNAN GALLERY; L.A. LOUVER; MARGO LEAVIN GALLERY; PERES PROJECTS; REDLING FINE ART; REGEN PROJECTS; ROSAMUND FELSEN GALLERY; SHOSHANA WAYNE; STEVE TURNER; SUSANNE VIELMETTER; THE HAPPY LION; THOMAS SOLOMON.
