The 19th Ernesto Illy Espresso Coffee Quality Award

Clovis Carvalho Filho, “red” partner of the illy Coffee Club, won the 19th Ernesto Illy Espresso Coffee Quality Award and will go back to Campos Altos (MG), a city located in the bushland of the State of Minas Gerais,  with a prize of $30,000. The award ceremony in which he received the prize was held by PDS/illycaffè on March 5, at the Buffet Torres Hall, in São Paulo (SP). In total, PDS/illycaffè awarded more than $100,000 to the 50 contest finalists and to the three final winners.  

Among the finalists, the runner up won $20,000; the 3rd - $10,000; the 4th - $5,000; the 5th - $3,000.;; from the 6th to the 10th - $1,000; and all the others, $700,. On this edition, Southern Minas Gerais won the first 10 prizes with six coffee producers, the Minas Gerais bushland had three finalists and the Matas de Minas region had one representative among the first finalists. In 2009, 471 samples were submitted – of superior quality – and, among the 50 finalists, the State of Minas Gerais was side-by-side with the States of Goiás, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The finalist samples were appraised by Brazilian and foreign experts.  

Among the classifying participants the first place went to João Augusto Soffe Meirelles (Carmo de Minas - MG), with 11 samples in the final round; the second went to Fernando Sergio Pimentel (Manhuaçu - MG), with four samples; and the third place went to Carlos Alberto Cabral Campos (Viçosa - MG), with three samples in the final round of the 19th Award Edition of the prize.

Chosen by the “illy Coffee Club” jury, the Supplier of the Year (2009/2010 harvest) was Adolfo Henrique Vieira Ferreira, of Alfenas (MG), “golden” quality partner. The prize is a cultural trip to Italy, where the winner will visit Venice and illycaffè’s headquarters in Trieste.Adolfo and a companion will travel to Italy with all the comfort provided by an Executive Class ticket, with air transportation graciously offered by Air France.

The jury, who elected Adolfo Henrique, had illycaffè Assicafé, Porto de Santos/illycaffè and ADS members, and evaluated criteria such as: supply fidelity, efficiency, on-time delivery, product conditions, lot correspondence with the original sample, complete documentation, fulfillment of quality and quantity sold, contribution to the questionnaire on sustainability, and participation in the Ernesto Illy Espresso Coffee Quality Award.

The “Acknowledgement of Practices and Sustainability Diploma” created in 2008 was granted to Fazenda Boa Vista, Tapiraí (MG), owned by Maria Luzia Tonelli de Faria. The other two finalists running for the Diploma were: Fazenda Santana, owed by Douglas Alberto Brasileiro, Patrocínio (MG); and Fazenda São Bernardo, owed by Roberto Queiroz do Nascimento, Alto do Paranaíba (MG).
   
After the analysis of the Questionnaires on Sustainability, answered by illy Coffee Club enrolled producers, and following technical visits to the three best classified plantations, the judging committee considered if they were sustainable in terms of social, environmental and economic aspects; had at least one sustainability certification; were fully engaged and had good agricultural practices implemented.
